THE CASE STUDY

Turning a love of everyday nature into a recognizable brand and a repeatable editorial system.

  1. Audience need Make birding approachable.
  2. Editorial choice Give every format a clear purpose.
  3. Creative application Build a consistent world across channels.

The challenge

Backyard Bird Haven needed a clear point of view and enough structure to sustain an ongoing publishing rhythm. The audience included beginner and intermediate backyard birders: people who wanted useful identification help, small discoveries, and a welcoming place to participate. A long list of post ideas would not, by itself, give the brand a consistent voice.

My role and remit

I developed the audience and content strategy, editorial planning, recurring concepts, and creative direction. The March and April 2026 planning materials establish the foundation. For this portfolio, I extended that foundation into a coordinated set of visual applications so the strategy could be understood through actual examples.

The strategic decisions

I organized the plan around 5 content pillars and 10 recurring series concepts, with a 7-day editorial rhythm. Each format has a different job: explain something, invite observation, encourage a personal story, or give someone a reason to return. The voice stays curious and approachable, with participation possible even for someone who does not yet know a bird’s name.

From strategy to creative

The educational carousel progresses from recognition to observation to a small action. Spark Bird invites people to share the moment their interest began. Field Notes makes room for a more personal email voice. The Little Lookout turns one editorial idea into seven daily prompts. Together, these examples show how the same brand can work across short social copy, longer writing, and physical-product concepts.

What I delivered

The planning work includes an Instagram content-system deck, audience strategy, concept library, caption structures, community prompts, and a weekly publishing framework. The six portfolio applications add a visual identity study, educational carousel, community story, newsletter, seven-day prompt series, and merchandise mockups.

Evidence of value

The evidence is the coherence and usability of the system: a defined audience, documented content scope, recurring formats, and examples that share a recognizable voice. This case demonstrates audience strategy, editorial judgment, and creative direction. The portfolio concepts explore the brand’s potential; audience growth, product sales, and campaign performance are not claimed.
